Imagine if the threat of viruses and spyware became a distant thought and your computer didn't get slower with age. Dream no more! With Linux, it's the rule. So what is Ubuntu Linux? Well, to help explain, here is a short story: Lets say you like to bake and you created a recipe for some chocolate chip cookies. You give this recipe to your friends, and encourage them to work with you and others as a group to improve the recipe. Now imagine you used the Internet to distribute this recipe under the same terms and allowed thousands of people to work together as a community to improve this cookie recipe. Now, pretend that cookie recipe is actually source code for a computer program, and that computer program is the operating system Linux. This is how Linux was created.
Linux is free, open-source software. The word "free" must be clarified because it is not just free as in "free beer" but also free as in "free speech." This distinction is further clarified by Gratis versus Libre. The software is licensed under the GNU General Public License which keeps the source code (like our chocolate chip cookie recipe) public domain and open to modification by the users. The source code also may not be made proprietary. To learn more, you may read and/or listen to my Ubuntu Linux F.A.Q. |
